Help with a problem concerning temperature and a pendulum clock?

A pendulum clock has a pendulum shaft made of aluminum which has a coefficient of linear expansion of 24.0*10^-6K^-1. At 22 degrees celsius the period of the swing of the pendulum is 1.00seconds. If the temperature is reduced to 5 degrees celcius, how much time does the clock gain or lose in 1 day?

The period of a pendulum is T = 2(pi)sqrt(L/g) so it goes as the square root of the length: doubling the length multiplies the period by 1.414...

so the clock would lose time (it would run more slowly by 41.4.., %)

Reducing the temperature by 5 degrees changes the length of the pendulum by a percentage you can compute from the coefficient of linear expansion. That is, you can compute the x such that:
L(18) = x L(22) or x = L(18) / L(22)

Since the period of the pendulum goes as the square root:
T(22) = C sqrt(L) for some C
changing L and only L gives:
T(18) = C sqrt(xL) = C sqrt(L) sqrt(x) = T(22) sqrt(x)
(Note that x is not the fraction of change but the new length as a fraction of the old)

If d is the seconds per day that the clock gains or loses, then since there are 60 x 60 x 24 = 86,400 seconds per day:

T(18) / T(22) = (86,400 + d) / 86,400 = sqrt(x)

So from x you can compute d.

Where in the heck can you buy plastic patio furniture?

I have looked everywhere..I just want the cheap, plastic patio sets with the tables (w/removable legs) & chairs... I have looked everywhere - Target, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Lowes, Ace, etc. & I can't find them on any of their websites. Do you think if I go into the stores I might find them? Help! Having housewarming BBQ in June & I have nowhere for people to sit outside.

BTW...is it rude to ask guests to take of their shoes when they come in my house? LOL.

Also the larger pharmacy departments like cvs, walgreens, they have them. I got one at walgreens $8 for the table, and $5 for each chair. Go to those stores you will find them.

Also go find some cheap benches for sitting, or some iron furniture. You can look at yardsales. This is the time for yardsales. And it will be cheapest. People usually upgrade and you might actually find seating that might work for you.

A question about helium air and balloons?

I'm having a party this summer and want to have an alienish theme with lights and alien related supplies. Sort of like a Mars attacks theme. My question is, there are high ceilings where I'm holding the event and I would like to have alien balloons floating around a couple of feet above head level but to not to reach the ceiling for people to shoot foam darts at. I'm thinking of filling part of the balloon by blowing it up partially and then filling the rest with helium. Would this air/helium mixture work or will the balloons float up all the way to the ceiling? Thank you to all who answer!

Yeah, you can do that. All you need is a set of pressure regulators on a manifold, so you can mix both flavors of gas as you fill them from the respective tanks.

As long as you keep the net density of air + helium + rubber membrane < density of air...you can have them positively buoyant.
