Steel Tip Darts Soft tip or steel tip dart to pop balloons?
I'm putting together a treasure hunt and in one of the games I want people to pop balloons with darts.
I've been looking at soft-tip darts, which seem to be cheaper - and steel tip darts that look much sharper but are more expensive.
I need 30 darts for just a few hours - and so don't want to spend too much money for such a quick event.
Can anyone tell me whether soft tip darts are likely to be sharp and pointy enough to pop the balloons easily ... or will more likely just keep bouncing off. I don't want it to be too hard or frustrating.
I am planning to glue the balloons to the baseboard (they are tube shaped balloons - not typical round balloons) ... so they don't move around too much. Haven't tested this yet - am hoping the tension of the glue won't make them pop.

If you want to get the job done right you will need to cough up the extra 50 cents. You can sell the darts afterward. Or give them away to make your guests happy. Or save them for another event in the future. Returning them to the store for a refund is dishonest and unethical. Getting the cheap darts is setting yourself and your guests up for a disappointment. Is it worth the risk?

I bought some steel tipped darts and a warning was attached about the lead in them can cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. My wife is pregnant and it scares me to think darts could cause birth defects. If its so bad why do they use it?

The Electronic Dart Board, Even the Kids Can Play
The electronic dart board just gets better and better. The original boards came out in the 1990s and caused a lot of controversy at the time that still goes on today. The purists hate them saying it isnt proper darts, but no one can deny their popularity. The big advantages are that the electronic game is safer and a lot more convenient than the traditional game. The darts have plastic tips so they are less dangerous and are much less likely to put holes in your wall and I think most of us appreciate the automatic scoring, especially for the Cricket game
There are now two types of electronic dart board around, the standard board with hundreds of holes in it and the new so called BristleTech board, which is similar to the standard bristle boards so you can use both steel tip darts and soft tips, and it still has the electronics to do all the scoring for you as well. This is truly the best of both worlds and is surely the way of the future.
The latest from Halex is the Armada Bristletech dartboard that has a laser that marks out the throw line for you! So you get to use whatever darts you like and the built in laser shows you where to throw from as well, fantastic! This is surely the ultimate board around for both schools of darters at the moment. Who knows, the electronic boards may be used in the big tournaments like the Las Vegas Classic before long.
There are standard wall mounted boards and the arcade style that doesnt need to be set up, as they are free standing and the board is already mounted for you at the correct height. (Great! no drilling) The latest electronic dart boards are relatively cheap, at a starting price of around $50 to $300 for the all singing, all dancing arcade types.
Also bear in mind the wall mounted version of the electronic dart board is necessarily bigger than the normal bristle boards because of the electronics, so when it comes to housing your new board, you will need a larger than normal dart board cabinet to accommodate it. Please ensure that if you get a dart board cabinet for your electronic board that it will fit the cabinet, there are cabinets made to fit the larger boards.

Steel Tip Darts what steel tip dart has the best grip?
i like a dart weighing anywhere from 30-42 i just need a good grip as the only problem i seem to face is the darts slipping out my hand and going off board. im currently using a designa metor 32 which seamed more gripy than they are. thers no places close for me to test darts.
I googled your dart style and didn't get any hits, so I don't know what it looks like.
The weight of the darts could be the cause. The weight you mention is quite heavy.
There are a number of different grips available from smooth to heavily knurled (a cross hatch pattern). I prefer the darts that have rings. I've thrown the 21g Lenny Heard (sp?) originally manufactured by Pacer Darts in Hermossa Beach CA. Pacer later sold the style to Accudart. It's been retired.
The barrel material can be a factor too. Some are brass which is a very soft and heavy metal, some are tungsten/nickle alloy. Tungsten is light but brittle, the nickle tempers the brittleness of the tungsten, but adds more weight...
The size of your hand influences how to select a dart that fits well.
Then there's "loading" or where the weight of the barrel is located. Mine are front loaded...so the barrel near the point is bigger than the barrel near the shaft... Front loaded darts naturally "lift" from the hand at the apex of the toss...if gripped correctly. Even loaded require more active grip (also dependent on the grip pattern...)
If you have a larger hand with thicker skin, you may want to go with a thicker, heavily knurled barrel to increase the comfort and grip.
Likewise the opposite if your hands are smaller and thinner skinned.
I'm not sure anyone "fits" darts anymore. It seems to be a lost craft.
