are starter pokemon good to have in your pokemon team if your playing in tournaments?
I just bought a pokemon guide book, and it tells you the top pokemon for each type, but none of the starters were in the chart! Are they really worth keeping if im going to play in a tournament?
It honestly depends on the rest of your team. Tournaments are competitive Pokemon so that means that not all the starters are going to rank high. Infernape is a high ranking Pokemon, and one of the few fire types in OU (smogon's normal tier). Torterra isn't great at all...sure it gets STAB on Earthquake, and is one of the few Pokemon that actually learns the move via level up, but competitively its bad. Empoleon, its not that great either, however it has its niche in OU and niche in competitive battling, we made room for it in OU.
Swampert is an overall excellent Pokemon, an excellent phazer (roar). Combine that with powerful STAB waterfall and EQ and you have a monstrous beast. He's not to great at sweeping. Sceptile is a good Pokemon, and has managed to get into OU. It has its abilities of specially sweeping, but not all the moves of this set are high accuracy so some dont use it for that reason. Blaziken is marked UU, but its endure + reversal set is a powerful combo, but halted by ghosts easily.
Typhlosion is really a scarfed eruption user and that's basically all. Feraligatr is an excellent physical sweeper, however, in UU. Its just not fast enough to pull off a solid sweep and not bulky enough to do much else. HG/SS made it a lot better, arguably the best Johto starter, but its still not that great. Maganieum (I spelled it wrong I know) is not that good. Its typing really ruins its nice bulk. If it was part steel, then we could talk, but since its not its down the drain basically.
Charizard is the only kanto starter that is OU, and for a good reason. It cans weep on both sides of the attacking spectrums and can perform mixed. It has excellent speed and special attack. However, its low OU due to the prevalance of stealth rock. Blastoise and Venasaur have their place, but they cant compete well against OU pokemon, not in a singles environment.
If you're really looking for good competitive pokemon information, then you should check out smogon's strategy pokedex:
http://www.smogon.com/dp/pokemon/
its very helpful, and in the competitive Pokemon world, what smogon says tier wise goes. Lots of what they say makes sense and the movesets they provide too. Its pretty legit and if your getting into Pokemon Competitive battling, you want to start there, on smogon. Additionally, if you want to ask more personal questions about this tournament or your team, you could join a little site called:
Qbone.org
its a Pokemon fan site that's trying to create a database, much like Smogon's, except for double battles and not singles. some of the information that smogon has for singles will work in doubles, but some of it isn't that viable. However, lots of people on Qbone can help you with improving yourself as a battler and providing helpful commentary on your team and stuff. I too, am member, and I love it there and I would be able to help you as well.
In conclusion, it honestly depends on the starters. Most aren't viable in the OU tier because most are quite slow and the typing of the starters isn't necessarily all that great. Water is a good type offensively grass is becoming more of a good offensive type but its not a good defensive type with many a weakness. Infernape just overall powns. Although I hate infernape, I cant deny its power and abilities as a lead its a well built Pokemon and arguably one of the best starters there is.
