Chrome Washers How much to tighten bolts and nuts on rear fender to ensure they don't loosen or fall due to vibration?
To make changes to backrest, had to remove 4 bolts holding the backrest to the rear fender, subsequently tighted the 4 bolts which hold rear fender to the banana shape chrome to what I thought is pretty tight, however, after an hour of riding, one bolt was completely unscrewed and bolt fell off.
Also, there was no washer between the nut and the inside wall of the bumper. Should a washer be added?
Any advise?
There should be a washer between them, but loc-tite will work, just be sure that you get the right kind, dont get pemanent seal loc-tite, or you'll never get those bolts out again if you ever need to. Use the blue threadlock or loc-tite, the red stuff is the kind that is more of a permanent sealing for nuts and bolts.

One thing for sure that hasn't changed in the last half a decade is that Chrome is Cool on Trucks. I have a 1994 Harley Davidson, with 80K miles, that is backfiring under throttle. It comes and goes. Sometimes it will backfire really bad when I hit the throttle and other times it will act just fine. Something loose? I took it to both of the Harley Dealers in my area and the first told me it was the jets and charged me $500 but that did not work, then I took it to the second and they rebuilt my carb and charged me $500 and that did not work. So I bought a new S&S carb for another $500 and it still backfires. I have also put new wire and plugs on and adjusted the timing. I am $1500 + into this problem and it still backfires really bad about 70% of the time it is running. Help!!
The dealers did test the compression and said everything looked good. I also put on a new intake manifold with the new SS Carb.
First of all, discount the time for a rebuild suggestion. You could be running oil through a worn out engine like poop through a tin horn and that isn't going to make it miss sometimes and not others.
Since it does it under accelleration, I'd be looking at ignition rather than fuel. Whacking open the throttle increases combustion pressure which can snuff out a weak spark. First of all, install new plugs if you haven't already. Gap them to Harley's specs but not over. The wider the gap, the more energy needed to initiate a spark.
If you have a multi meter, check the resistance in the resistor cap (plug cap). If you get more than 20,000 ohms, it's time for a new one. I like to see 12,000 or less myself. Also see if the plug wires are touching metal because of the possibility of leakage through the old wires. Does it run worse or start hard when the weather's foggy or wet but run better when dry? If so, that's a sign that the old plug wires need replaceing.
However, I expect it to be something else. My first guess would be the ignition coil. It has some age on it and has lived in a pretty hot environment. Heat eventually caused the insulation in the wires inside to break down, letting it short out. Sometimes you can find little cracks in the outside plastic insulation, but other times they look fine. I can't remember if Harleys have one or two coils, but I bet that's the problem.
In the late '70s and early 80's Kawasaki had similiar coil problems with their early pointless ignitions, especially the coils roasting under the tank on the hot running 1300's. They got so hot that Kawasaki had to put insulation on the bottom of the fuel tank because you could open the lid and see the gas boiling at the bottom of the tank.
If you can, get good high power coils like Dyna. If you can get something with more get up and go than the OEM, you can increase the spark plug gap .005 or so and that will make it run better, especially on startup. If you get aftermarket coils, make sure the primary resistance is correct for your bike. Most Dynas are 2.5 ohm which is a common requirement for electronic bike ignitions. There are coils out there with more like .8 ohm resistance, and if your bike needs 2.5 ohms, you'll need to add a resistor of around 1.7 ohms between the positive lead and the positive terminal on the coil.
It could be a corroded connection somewhere between the coils and cdi box, but considering the age and mileage of the bike, I'd suspect the coils first. Even if the OEM coils are ok, new high powered coils will make the bike start and run much better.
There's good mechanics out there, but too many of the young guys don't spend enough time reasoning out the problem and are too quick to start changing parts. The backfiring under hard throttle should have been a tip off that it's ignition and not carburation. If you can, find some old fart like me that's been around the block several times or some older long haired dude that grew up wrenching on the pre-evolution jobs. Sport Bike -POPPING CLUTCH - why does this happen?
I remember riding a dirtbike a 1982 yamaha or 83 and I popped the clutch cause I kicked, and gave it gass while holding the clutch and released it too quick. The front came up and got hurt.
I could never understand why this happens? couldn't they make a bike that you don't need to be holding down a clutch?

1) Do all sport bikes start this way in 2008?
if so - how come I 've never seen somebody not do this at a red light, or starting in a parking lot? you would think this would happend to even pro riders all the time. You can just have a lapse and forget or in a hurry, and pop-oooops there goes the front.

3) how come a sport bike can't just have a key like a car, and start and you hold down throttle like a scooter?

For one, some sportbikes do that. New riders make that mistake and hurt themselves all the time.
Second, a transmission on a sport bike would weight too much and be too bulky. A manual transmission is better in any vehicle because you have more control over what the vehicle is doing.
All sport bikes are manual. Scooters don't have a transmission / gears to change that's why they just go without shifting.

What is this piece of equipment? and what's it used on? racecar or racecycle or go cart or engine on a stand??
I'll try to describe: Imagine a two-wheel dolly with little (8" tall x6" wide) fat tires/aluminum rims, and a metal box with a lid (instead of a flat platform) that holds a car battery. A pair of thick cables run from the battery box to an engine starter (automotive size). The starter is mounted perpendicular on a bar shaped in a half circle (to be able to pick up & hold the starter) that also has a push-button/ solenoid setup attached where your right thumb could press. At the business end of the starter, instead of a gear (like a car starter) there is a flat disc with teeth. Also on this end is a smaller, flat metal, half circle piece for attaching the starter to whatever you want to spin or turn. So - you can pick up the starter, attach/ mount it temporarily to some kind of motor/engine/gear/something, press the button and make "something" spin. this most definately sounds like a starter for drag racing and funny car engines. They do not use a battery or starter, and the ignition is usually a magneto. the device is a remote starter, if you watch NHRA, you will see similar devices used to start the engines, it simply attaches to the front of the engine, the button is pushed and it turns the engine over. the magneto works off of engine rotation and supplies power for the spark plugs.
