Nhl Carolina

If the NHL were to retract which four teams would you drop from the league and why?

My choices:

Florida Panthers - Little visible support beyond Miami and Ft Lauderdale and they are not competitve enough.

Columbus Blue Jackets - Lets face it, they are never going to be that competitve are they?

New York Islanders - Probably more contraversial than the other choices but when you have the Rangers playing in downtown NYC does the Big Apple need another team?

Carolina Hurricanes - Too many teams in the South. Hockey is a winter sport and belongs in the North therefore, its the chopping block for the Canes.

With fewer teams maybe the NHL can share the wealth in terms of audience, profit and player talent better than spreading itself far and wide. What do you think?

If 4 had to go.....

1). Nashville Predators-If you are battling for the President's trophy and can't draw more than 12,000 fans a game, you don't deserve a team

2). Phoenix Coyotes- As many have said before, hockey doesn't belong in the desert.

3) Washington Capitals- I can't believe no one has suggested this yet. They have exciting young talent, and nobody in D.C. seems to care. When they're good, attendance is bad, and when they're bad (like this year), the attendance is absolutely terrible.

4). Florida Panthers- Southern city, poor attendance, not likely to be a winner in the near future. Send this franchise to Canada where it would flourish, good or bad.

If there's any justice in the NHL, Winnipeg should get one of the franchise's that relocated. But the NHL seems to screw everything up, so my guess is we'll see the San Antonio Predators or something equally ridiculous in the near future.

I know New Jersey tied 3-3 last week on Saturday, and lost 0-4, but who won the final decider.
I can't believe that the Devils lost it so easily, let's lynch them, bast*rds. I'm just too lazy to look into too many details.

Why is South Carolina so horrible at the game of football?

South Carolina got absolutely demolished today by the Florida Gators. I don't mean that they lost, or merely lost bad - no; they were RAVAGED like a Viking would ravage a kidnapped Irish maiden. They were treated like "comfort women" were treated by imperial Japanese soldiers. Their manhood was taken from them on live national TV.

They lost by FIFTY. On live TV. That's not a typo.

They lost. By FIFTY!

Why is South Carolina so horrendous at the game of football? Do people in high school in SC not play football, and thus, the state's university simply can't put together a decent program? What's the deal here?

Florida is not very good; they don't even have a perfect home record. They lost to unranked Mississippi. South Carolina is simply really awful, I guess.

Team Building for Executives: How the Carolina Hurricanes Became Nhl Champions

It's a question that's top of mind for most managing executives: "How can I get the most out of my staff?" In the hyper-competitive business environment of today, many businesses are becoming aware that a prerequisite of peak performance is a psychological understanding of actual human motivators.

A basic behavioral understanding shows that frequently, things previously thought of as "intangibles" are often at the forefront of an individual's motivating factors. These intangibles relate to the innate desire in human beings to be part of something larger; to extend his or her circle of connectedness outward, past the family/friends sphere; and if possible, to instill a good dose of meaning in one's function at the workplace.

The fact is, as a species the human desire for 'meaning' is at an all-time high. People find meaning most often when they feel they are an integral, even powerful part of something larger. (Remember that to 'empower' does not necessarily require the bestowal of a higher position or title.)

The recognition of this general concept is likely responsible for the growth of team building programs being implemented in companies of all shapes and sizes. But to get to the point, how can you improve your company's team building concept or event to achieve highly positive results?

The Proof: 23rd to Champions in One Season
To have a more detailed at what works and why, let's break down an example. Hockey fans will know that recently the Carolina Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup, the holy grail of the sport. The previous season, 2003-04 (as 2004-05 was nullified because of a lockout), the Hurricanes finished a lowly 23rd in the NHL - 15 points out of the playoffs. How did such a growth in performance happen, and who or what is responsible?

The answer does not lie in the Hurricanes headhunting acumen, as 17 of their 24 players were either returnees from the 2003-04 team, or were unproven greenhorns at the elite level of the NHL. Rather, they developed and integrated a cohesive team concept in a rather interesting way; a way which is relevant to just about any staff manager out there.

To make the Hurricanes successful, Laviolette believed he had to do two things: create an inclusive atmosphere for everyone in the entire organization, and secondly, have every player buy in to his vision. Sometimes the team building included something simple, an impromptu meeting or watching Monday Night Football as a team. But the team admits that they biggest single difference maker came just prior to the start of the season.

It was at an event away from the 'office', in fact in the middle of a forest, with players working together on a rope-climbing obstacle course. On the rope course, players were climbing 30 to 40 feet above the ground on the apparatus and were heavily dependent on each other.

"I come from the minor leagues, and in the minor leagues there is a closeness," Laviolette says. "And I found that there were walls up here that separate players, separate the coaches, separate the management. Those walls are built so high, and I don't think they have to be here. That's just my opinion. I think if you can tear down those walls, you can get people to care about each other. Who do you want to fight the hardest for? It's the people you care about."

Hurricanes' defenseman Glen Wesley recalled the team building event's igniting effect. "It was something that was a lot of fun and there were some great memories from that time of bonding," Wesley said. "It really just started getting us close as a group right from Day 1 and it continued from there."

Duplicating a Winning Model
If every participant in your team building event can come away with a sense of achieving something unique as a team, it goes without saying that the meaning and energy within the group dynamic rises dramatically. Remember this: meaning is synonymous with commitment, and commitment plus energy equals revenue. We've seen this time and time again, but this concept is still not widely accepted by many executives.

Rising Above Fears
In the above example, the fear of heights was confronted and overcome. If together a team can overcome a situation where fear-based emotions were prominent, a natural sense of bonding occurs. Camaraderie and a powerful sense of 'team' are amplified. As far as team building goes, this an area where perhaps the traditional company golf tourney misses out.

Of course, there is a difference between perceived fear and actual danger. The safety of individuals must always be held paramount.

Enlarging the Circle of Trust
An added bonus often presents itself to include customers and associates in team building group events. Further extending and wrapping your feel-good corporate culture around associates in this way can strengthen relationships and increase purchases dramatically. Take advantage of this when available and appropriate.

Carolina Panthers - Past and Present

It was at the later quarter of 1993 that the Carolina Panthers were awarded an NFL expansion franchise. Thousands of people literally celebrated with this good news. Businessman Jerry Richardson, the person who led Carolina's bid, proclaimed the award to be a dream come true. The dream started way back 1987 when Richardson met other interested parties to discuss the feasibility of entering a multi-city competition for two NFL expansion franchises.

Everything was made official December of the same year. After a year of tedious planning, Hall of Fame Mike McCormack was hired as a consultant for the expansion effort. Selecting the stadium site was the first thing to be done and the site in Uptown Charlotte was chosen. Because of the huge efforts put into the Carolina's franchise bid, a lot of support was received from then US Senators Jesse Helms and Ernest Hollings as well as Governors Carroll Cambell and Jim Martin. Fans also did their part by demonstrating their support in exhibition games played in 1990 and 1991 respectively.

However, problems arose in 1992 with regards to the ongoing NFL labor situation and the expansion vote was delayed until the fall of 1993. It served as a great news however that on January of the same year, the league and its players reached the seven-year Collective Bargaining Agreement. And during the month of March, the expansion race resumed.

June of the same year, Richardson Sports revealed that it was willing to finance as 72,300 seat stadium. By the start of July, all club seats and luxury boxes were sold out. On October of 1993, NFL owners selected the Carolina Panthers as the 29th NFL franchise and the first expansion team since the year 1976.

The Panthers played their inaugural game during the annual AFC-NFC Hall of Fame Game in Ohio against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Both teams benefited from the exposure and proved themselves ready to compete in the NFL. Ever since then, the Panthers improved continuously and into the NFC championship game in its second season.

In 2003, the Panthers won the NFC championship to earn a spot in the Super Bowl XXXVIII. At present, the Panthers have their hopes high to knockout the Falcon's hope for the division title. They have conditioned their minds on how badly Atlanta wants to win the game against them so they can take the proper strategy in what can be called as the biggest upset of the year.

The Panthers are eyeing to clinch the NFC division title, just like any other team would but they have a great chance of getting it because of the team that they are. Improvement in defense as well as offense should be done to ensure that they will win the succeeding games. The Panthers are outstanding players with a great coach, they just need to synchronize and get into the same level with one another so that they can play a better game out in the field. Well, let's wait and see how things go for the Carolina Panthers.
