What You Need for a Game of Darts
Darts is such a great activity because it requires little in the way of preparation and supplies. You can begin darting with as little as a pack of already assembled darts and an easy dart board. Put a little more effort into finding supplies, though, and you will get the rewards of a more entertaining and engaging game of darts with your friends.
What do you need for darts? The first thing most people think of is probably the dartboard. You won't need to find anything too fancy for a dartboard, just make sure it's sturdy and has numbers that are visible from several feet away. Most non-electronic dart boards are bristle boards made from a natural material called sisal (also used for making ropes) and will last for a long time. Cork dartboards are also common, but don't age well, especially if an a lot of games are played on them (you'll start to notice pockmarks in cork boards after only a few games). Electronic boards are the other style of board, and these are great for having larger darts games as you won't have to keep track of the score. You also won't have to worry about getting holes on your wall. They also don't eek much juice and are plug in and play, for the most part.
But dartboards are far from the most important part of the game, instead, you should really focus your money and your mind on finding the darts themselves. Though friends that are regular players may have their own set, a default set for when they visit is good to have. Find darts made of durable materials with stable flights and comfortable grips. You won't need anything beyond brass darts if you're just starting off or not regularly hosting events at which friends will play with you. They retail for between $15-$20, look nice, and are pretty durable. If you're planning on becoming a regular player, you may want to invest in Tungsten darts to get the most out of your practices.
Darts is not a complicated game, and this is reflected in the simplicity of its materials. Be on the lookout for affordable dartboards and darts when you can, and you'll have your dream setup in no time.
