On a dart board why are the numbers in the order they are?
i can understand why its not 1,2,3,4 etc as if you missed 20 you'd try to miss to the left and hit 19. but you decided and for what reason 20 should have 5 to the left and 1 to the right.
i understand this (1st two answers) but who decided this? how long have they been arranged this way?
The man who is credited with the "invention" of the numbering sequence of the modern standard dartboard is Brian Gamlin.Gamlin was a carpenter from Bury and came up with the sequence in 1896 aged 44.He died in 1903 before he could patent the idea.
The numbering is designed in such a way as to cut down the incidence of "lucky shots" and reduce the element of chance.The numbers are placed in such a way as to encourage accuracy.
There are 121,645,100,408,832,000 different possible arrangements of the 20 segments so Gamlin's arrangements of the numbers is almost perfect.
